How Much Do You Need to Sleep?

Sleep is an incredibly important thing for most Americans. So often in this country, we sacrifice sleep for work, and are commended for the virtue of hard work, but this is simply not healthy. Not only do all-nighters lead to brain cell damage, a consistent lack of sleep is terrible for your health.

So, how much sleep do you need anyway? The answer can vary depending on your personal situation. That being said, there are typical rules for sleep averages that can be derived from your age.

Here are three ages that sleeping more can be beneficial:

1) Infants
When it comes to newborns, they’ll be sleeping more hours than they actually will be awake. Every infant is different, but the average infant should be sleeping 16 hours a night, in order to make those other 8 hours as developmental as possible.

2) 10 Years Old
At 10 years old, you tend to be growing rapidly. Your personality is changing, your body is growing, and you are learning how to think for yourself. In order to properly grow and learn, we recommend most 10-year-olds get 10-11 hours of sleep per night.

3) 18 Years Old
18-year-olds are graduating high school, trying to find a job, and chasing that degree. According to our estimates, 18-year-olds need an average of 8 hours of sleep, although the occasional nap can also be good for their health.
